WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs (SCIA), praised the committee’s passage of six pieces of legislation.
“These bills are intended to improve Indian communities,” said Chairman Barrasso. “As these bills move forward, I will work with our members on how we can continue to help those in Indian Country.”
At the business meeting, the committee passed the following six pieces of legislation:
· S. 1419, a bill to promote the academic achievement of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian children with the establishment of a Native American language grant program (introduced by Senator Jon Tester [D-MT]);
· S. 1436, a bill to require the Secretary of the Interior to take land into trust for certain Indian tribes, and for other purposes (introduced by Senators Harry Reid [D-NV] and Dean Heller [R-NV]);
· S. 1443, a bill to amend the Indian Employment, Training and Related Services Demonstration Act of 1992 to facilitate the ability of Indian tribes to integrate the employment, training and related services from diverse federal sources, and for other purposes (introduced by Senator Lisa Murkowski [R-AK]);
· S. 1761, a bill to take certain federal land located in Lassen County, Calif., into trust for the benefit of the Susanville Indian Rancheria, and for other purposes (introduced by Senators Barbara Boxer [D-CA] and Dianne Feinstein [D-CA]);
· S. 1822, a bill to take certain federal land located in Tuolumne County, Calif., into trust for the benefit of the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians, and for other purposes (introduced by Senator Barbara Boxer [D-CA]); and
· H.R. 387, a bill to provide for certain land to be taken into trust for the benefit of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, and for other purposes (introduced by Representative Raul Ruiz [D-CA-36]).
