Hoeven: Indian Affairs Committee Passes Two Bills

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven, chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, announced that the committee has passed S. 664 – the Navajo Utah Water Rights Settlement Act of 2017 and H.R. 5317 – To repeal section 2141 of the Revised Statutes to remove the prohibition on certain alcohol manufacturing on Indian lands.

According to Senator Hoeven, “The Committee took action today to help Tribes access the resources they need to become more self-sufficient and economically independent.”

S. 664 – the Navajo Utah Water Rights Settlement Act of 2017:

Ratifies and modifies the Navajo Utah Water Rights Settlement Agreement negotiated between the Navajo Nation, the United States, and Utah.
Specifically, the bill enumerates the Navajo Nation’s right to use water from sources located within Utah and adjacent to or encompassed within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation Reservation.

H.R. 5317 – To repeal section 2141 of the Revised Statutes to remove the prohibition on certain alcohol manufacturing on Indian lands

Repeals a prohibition on creating or continuing a distillery in Indian country for manufacturing ardent spirits (distilled liquors).
