Washington—Senator John Hoeven (R-ND), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, today convened an oversight hearing on “The President’s FY 2020 Budget Request for Indian Programs.”
“The President’s Budget Request provides the Administration’s priorities for the following fiscal year and beyond,” said Hoeven. “Through varying programs and initiatives, the Administration has created over 5 million new jobs, decreased the unemployment rate, and made it easier for Tribes to participate in a renewed economy. Understanding that financial adjustments are to be made in annual Budget Requests, we cannot forget that Indian programs require appropriate funding to operate and maintain services to the millions of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiians living in the United States.”
The Committee heard testimony from The Honorable Tara Mac Lean Sweeney, Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs, U.S. Department of the Interior; Rear Admiral Chris Buchanan, Deputy Director, Indian Health Service, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; The Honorable Jefferson Keel, President, National Congress of American Indians; and The Honorable Andrew Joseph Jr., Portland Area Representative, National Indian Health Board.
