WASHINGTON — This week, U.S. Senator Tom Udall will deliver a speech on the Senate floor denouncing Senate Republicans last-ditch Graham-Cassidy TrumpCare bill, which would have disastrous effects on health care in Indian Country. In addition, Udall will headline “Democracy at Risk: Solving Critical Problems Threatening U.S. Elections,” a conversation about campaign finance reform at the Brookings Institution. As vice chair of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, Udall will preside over an oversight hearing on human trafficking of Native Americans, as well as co-hosting a roundtable discussion on improving the infrastructure permitting process in Indian Country. And Udall will meet with the commander of the 58th Special Operations Wing of Kirtland Air Force Base.
Today, Tuesday, Sept. 26, Udall will deliver a speech on the Senate floor to outline his opposition to the latest Senate Republican Graham-Cassidy TrumpCare bill. Udall will discuss how the bill’s massive cuts to the Medicaid program would devastate access to life-saving health care across Indian Country.
Later Tuesday, Udall will meet with the commander of the 58th Special Operations Wing of Kirtland Air Force Base. Udall, who sits on the Appropriations Committee and fights for strong funding for New Mexico’s bases, will hear an update on readiness and continuing world-class training at the 58th Special Operations Wing.
On Wednesday, Sept. 27, Udall will headline a Brookings Institution discussion entitled “Democracy at Risk: Solving Critical Problems Threatening U.S. Elections.” Udall will discuss his longtime efforts to reform the nation’s campaign finance system to return our elections to the hands of the people.
Later Wednesday, Udall will preside as vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs at an oversight hearing on “The GAO Reports on Human Trafficking of American Indian and Alaska Natives in the United States.” Udall will press Department of Justice and other officials on how agencies plan to more effectively collect and maintain data on investigations and prosecutions of human trafficking in Indian Country.
On Thursday, Sept. 28, Udall will co-host a roundtable titled “Best Practices in Tribal Consultation and Stakeholder Engagement: Federal Permitting and Infrastructure Project Review in Indian Country.” During the roundtable, Udall will highlight the need for transparency and cooperation between Tribes, the federal government, and industry to respect the trust relationship in the Tribal consultation process for infrastructure permitting.
