WASHINGTON — This week, U.S. Senator Tom Udall, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and vice chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, will urge funding for New Mexico priorities at several committee hearings to review the Fiscal Year 2018 budget requests for the U.S. departments of Defense, Agriculture, and State, and the National Nuclear Security Administration. All of these agencies support jobs and important programs and installations in New Mexico and are critical to the state’s economic health.
In addition, Udall also will oversee a business meeting and legislative hearing to review several bills related to Indian Country, including a Udall-cosponsored bill to expand the AMBER Alert warning system in Indian Country by clarifying that all Indian Tribes are eligible for federal grants to law enforcement agencies. Tragically, the need was highlighted after the abduction and murder of 11-year-old Ashlynne Mike last year.
