Schatz, Murkowski Applaud Chief Lynn Malerba’s Appointment As Treasurer Of The United States

Malerba Is First Native American To Serve As Treasurer

Malerba Will Also Lead New Treasury Office Of Tribal And Native Affairs

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i), chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), vice chairman of the Committee, released the following statements on the appointment of Lynn Malerba, Lifetime Chief of the Mohegan Tribe, to serve as Treasurer of the United States at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Malerba will also lead Treasury’s new Office of Tribal and Native Affairs, coordinating Tribal relations across the Department.

“Congratulations to Chief Malerba on her appointment as the nation’s first Native American Treasurer. Her distinct qualifications as a Tribal leader and previous member of Treasury’s Tribal Advisory Committee lend vital expertise to her new role, particularly as Treasury continues rolling out significant American Rescue Plan resources for Native communities,” said Chairman Schatz. “Chief Malerba’s historic appointment affirms the administration’s ongoing commitment to empowering Native leadership at the highest levels of the federal government.”

“The appointment of Chief Lynn Malerba to serve as the first Native American Treasurer of the United States is significant. I also welcome the creation of a new Office of Tribal and Native Affairs, which will allow Treasury to work with Tribes on issues across the Department’s portfolios. Last year, I introduced legislation to establish such an office at Treasury, which would facilitate Tribal relations. I look forward to the office engaging Native communities across the country, accounting for the diversity of these communities and their institutions,” said Vice Chairman Murkowski.

In addition to leading the Office of Tribal and Native Affairs, the Treasurer of the United States directly oversees the U.S. Mint, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Fort Knox, and is a key liaison with the Federal Reserve. Malerba will also serve as a senior advisor to the Secretary in the areas of community development and public engagement. More information on Malerba’s career and new role can be found here.
