Hoeven: Indian Affairs Committee Passes Two Bills

WASHINGTON - Senator John Hoeven, chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, announced that the committee has passed S. 664 – the Navajo Utah Water Rights Settlement Act of 2017 and H.R. 5317 – To repeal section 2141 of the Revised Statutes to remove the prohibition on certain alcohol manufacturing on Indian lands.

According to Senator Hoeven, β€œThe Committee took action today to help Tribes access the resources they need to become more self-sufficient and economically independent.”

S. 664 - the Navajo Utah Water Rights Settlement Act of 2017:

  • Ratifies and modifies the Navajo Utah Water Rights Settlement Agreement negotiated between the Navajo Nation, the United States, and Utah.
  • Specifically, the bill enumerates the Navajo Nation's right to use water from sources located within Utah and adjacent to or encompassed within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation Reservation.

H.R. 5317 - To repeal section 2141 of the Revised Statutes to remove the prohibition on certain alcohol manufacturing on Indian lands

  • Repeals a prohibition on creating or continuing a distillery in Indian country for manufacturing ardent spirits (distilled liquors).
